The NYC side is overtaking my Long Island side

I've lived in the city heavily populated city-like area of Astoria for what? 3 or 4 months now? Now, I am hardly an authentic NYC girl - in my mind I am, but I can face facts and admit that since my childhood was spent on Long Island and I only have a few months under my belt, I am still a Long Island girl at heart. A bridge and tunnel-er at my core. I will say that I feel like I should get some city gal points for city next to a homeless man with a straight face as he de-robed on the subway the other day. That's his home, who am I to judge?

I won't say that I'm giving up on the Long Islander in me, but I am suppressing her. I'm becoming one of those people who hustles across the streets of manhattan avoiding lights, looking like they know where they're going, and I've finally figured out how to tell the cardinal directions of the streets without holding my iPhone up in the air and praying for a signal. Progress? I'd say so.

I even find myself getting annoyed by Long Island sometimes. Like why are Metrocard machines so damn hard to find out there? There are buses! I actually hadn't left the boroughs since Thanksgiving before my mom's birthday on Sunday, and you know what? It didn't feel like it. Maybe the city's stuck in a time loop because I swear it felt like 2 weeks.

With that being said, this video helped me realize that the New Yorker in me has been coming out, full-force. To my followers  that aren't New Yorkers - what do you think? Unfortunately (and not unfortunately), this is exactly how a lot of New Yorkers are. It's kind of funny!

  1. I never been to NY (hides face), but I'm planning to visit this summer. My cousin is from there and she has told me many stories as I sit with my mouth open in disbelief especially about the train. Is this what I'm getting myself into? But I will brave it and visit. I'm from down south in the country so this is out of my comfort zone, but I'm sure it's a great place and I'll have fun. I need to look you up when I come.

  2. LMAO, thats not the kind of new yorker i am...maybe cuz i'm a long island girl too lol. I love Queens and hate having to go to Manhattan. But those bits about the i hate it here/i love it here, bagels/pizza, "who goes to the statue of liberty" and hating tourists...spot on! lol

  3. Being though Manhattan/ Harlem will always be home I am forever saying a few of these things. It's funny b/c when I saw this video on Friday I couldn't stop laughing b/c it;s like I hear these words everyday, especially the Cab situation.. I say "I'm gonna report you" at least 3x times a week.. when I take the cab to work OR even attempt to go to Brooklyn (if I don't drive).

And of course the tourist... I can't stand them, etc.. We all have some type of NY in us, etc

  4. I love this post! I have lived in Manhattan for about 7 months and sometimes I hardly remember what it was like in Florida. I don't miss my car, or the farms, the quiet nights, or the beach. I love the city, the subways, the sirens, and most of all the crazy things that happen (like homeless men derobing!) The first time I saw this video I was shocked at how many of those things had come out of my mouth in the few short months that I have been here. It is so funny!! I think that it is great that you are comfortable here, if it makes you happy.

Also, I am impressed that you know which direction to walk when you get off the subway, it really busts my bubble when I walk a whole avenue in the wrong direction...lol.

  8. I've never been to the Big Apple, so I can't say I understand the difference between an Astoria girl and a Long Island girl. But if you keep yourself somewhere in the middle, I think you'll be in a good place. There's always a happy medium :)

  15. Shout to respecting the homeless man's humble abode (and quite possibly, his "commode"... Yes, I know...) as he de-robed in front of your very eyes. The more and more you become a city girl, the more normalcy you will find in the oddest things.

For the video- it is now 4:00pm Eastern. My day started at 7am. And I can testify to having said aLL of these thing today. Lol.. Just kidding! But really though- I have at least said all 90 percent of those things at least 5 times each in my life.

Law and Order was definitely shooting the other day and no one, and I mean no one, hardly ever goes to Queens. Queens isn't even transit-friendly. Really though? They were on point with that one!

Thanks for the most, girly! Refreshing, as always.

  16. That video and those like it have become my life. Lol. They are SO funny to watch. My favorite part is: "Don't hit me. Don't hit me. Don't hit me." Who doesn't think that when crossing a busy street?

    :)

Best wishes from one blogger to another,

  17. Never been to NY, but I def wanna go there. Was going to live there for an internship a year ago but found something in state and never left. However, I do have friends there and def agree that's how people act in cities. I live in the city and have lived in Chicago and can relate to the craziest things you will ever see, things you never thought would happen! Also figuring out the streets and directions is definitely a hassle but once you've got it down, you feel like you've climbed the grand canyon! hahah

    good post girly! :)

  18. This post was so cool to read! I am not from NY at all, but one side of my extended family as well as one of my best friends live there. It's so amazing how different we are. Imagine what it's like when they come down to the South to visit!! HA!

When I watched the video I couldn't stop laughing because the people totally sounded like my auntie and my bestie, from opposite ends. I can hear bestie saying she never leaves Brooklyn and I can hear auntie saying I never go to Brooklyn! They both talk about Law & Order being filmed, eat bagels and pizza all the time, and laugh at me when I say I'm eating a bowl of grits and turkey bacon for breakfast (though that isn't in the video lol).

I'm making a trip up that way in the late spring and cannot wait for the culture shock lol. How am I gonna figure out the streets, the train, the subway and all that? Maybe I won't get harassed too much for being "country slow" as I always do. *sigh*

    Great post, Nhya!
